Total setup time: about 3 minutes. You only need to do this once.

Step 1: Sign Up

Go to the Sign Up page. Enter your email, a password, your display name, and your register number. Approval is automatic — your account is ready about 20 seconds after you submit.

Step 2: Download the App

Download CrystalMeth.exe from this Link. Save it anywhere you like. It's a single file, no installer.

Step 3: Right-Click Your .seb File

The installer registers Crystal Meth automatically. To open your exam, right-click the .seb file, choose Open with, and select Crystal Meth.

If you want double-click to launch Crystal Meth automatically, choose Always use this app when the picker appears.

Step 4: Get Your .seb File

Your college will give you a .seb file before the exam. It's usually an email attachment or a link from your instructor. Save it somewhere you'll remember.

Step 5: Launch the Exam

Double-click the .seb file. On first launch, a login window will appear — enter the credentials you used to sign up. After that, the app opens Chrome and launches the exam.

Log in to Moodle as usual. The overlay (top bar + taskbar) will stay on screen for the whole session.

Troubleshooting — Installation

• “Windows protected your PC” when I run the installer.
  — Click More info → Run anyway. This appears because the app isn't code-signed (signing costs money we don't have). It's safe.
• Windows Defender quarantines CrystalMeth-Setup.exe during or after install.
  — The installer adds a Defender exclusion automatically, but some setups still flag it. To fix manually:
  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
  2. Find the quarantined file, click Actions → Restore.
  3. Go to Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add a folder. Add C:\Program Files\CrystalMeth.
  4. Re-run the installer.
• Installer says “Python 3.12 not found” or the app opens but nothing loads.
  — Python 3.12 is required and must be on your system PATH. Download from python.org. During install, tick the box "Add Python to PATH". To verify: open PowerShell and run python --version. It should print Python 3.12.x. If it says "not recognized", Python isn't installed correctly — uninstall and reinstall, this time with the PATH box ticked.
• UAC prompt: “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”
  — Click Yes. The installer needs admin permission once to register the .seb file association and add the Defender exclusion.
• I already have real Safe Exam Browser installed. Which one opens when I double-click?
  — Whichever one was set as the default handler most recently. Right-click the .seb file → Open with → choose Crystal Meth. Then tick "Always use this app" if you want double-click to use Crystal Meth from now on. You can always switch back the same way.

Troubleshooting — First Launch

• Double-clicking the .seb file does nothing.
  — Three possibilities:
  1. Wait 10–15 seconds. First launch unpacks the app bundle. Older PCs can take up to 30 seconds.
  2. Re-run the installer to register the file association again.
  3. Launch manually: open PowerShell, navigate to C:\Program Files\CrystalMeth\, and run:
  .\CrystalMeth.exe "C:\path\to\your-file.seb"
• Cursor spins forever, nothing opens.
  — Same as above. Wait longer. If it's been more than 60 seconds, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), end any CrystalMeth.exe or mitmdump.exe processes, and try again.
• Chrome opens but shows “No internet” or a blank page.
  — The proxy didn't start. Fix:
  1. Close Chrome completely (check Task Manager if needed).
  2. Quit the overlay from its taskbar.
  3. Double-click the .seb file again.
• Chrome shows “Your connection is not private” or a certificate error.
  — The mitmproxy certificate wasn't installed. Fix:
  1. In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and security → Security → Manage certificates.
  2. Look for mitmproxy in the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" tab.
  3. If it's missing, re-run the installer. It installs the cert automatically.
• “Account pending approval” when I try to log in.
  — New accounts auto-approve ~20 seconds after signup. If you see this message, wait a moment and try again. If it persists after a full minute, contact the admin.
• Login dialog appears every time I launch.
  — Common causes:
  • Your account was revoked — check with the admin.
  • Your session token expired — log in once, and it should stick.
  • The session file is corrupted — delete %APPDATA%\CrystalMeth\session.json and log in again.
• “Profile Locked” message after entering name and register number.
  — Your display name and register number are already set and can't be changed locally. If they're wrong, contact the admin.

Troubleshooting — During the Exam

• “Out of minutes” — session terminated.
  — Your total credit balance (standard + premium) is 0. Top up on the Donate page before starting another session.
• “Out of premium minutes” — session terminated.
  — You tried to access an OTP-protected page but your premium credit is 0. Two options:
  • Top up premium credit on the Donate page, then relaunch.
  • If you don't need the OTP page right now, go back to a normal page and continue the exam there. Note: the app will keep refusing OTP pages until you top up.
• “Premium minutes required” or the exam site refuses to load an OTP page.
  — Same as above. OTP-protected pages need premium credit. Standard credit alone won't work on them. Buy at least one premium credit before any exam that uses OTP.
• My minutes are going down but I'm not clicking anything.
  — Minutes tick down every 60 seconds while a session is active. "Active" means the overlay and proxy are running — not just Chrome. If you're not taking the exam, quit the overlay from its taskbar. The session ends and the timer stops.
• Exam site says “Invalid SEB keys” or similar.
  — The .seb file is for a different exam. Ask your instructor for the correct one.
• The SEB overlay (top bar / taskbar) disappears mid-exam.
  — A bug. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del → Task Manager. End CrystalMeth.exe and mitmdump.exe. Relaunch by double-clicking the .seb file. Your balance is preserved — nothing was deducted while the session was down.
• Chrome crashes mid-exam.
  — The proxy keeps running. Close Chrome completely, then double-click the .seb file again. Your remaining minutes are unchanged.
• The exam page loads but I can't proceed past the first screen.
  — Two likely reasons:
  • It's an OTP page and you have no premium credit — check your balance on the Donate page.
  • You have 0 total credit — the session will end shortly. Top up and relaunch.
• Session terminated for no obvious reason.
  — Possible causes: out of minutes, out of premium minutes, token expired (30+ days inactive), or a temporary network issue with the auth server. Check your balance on the Donate page. If you have credit and the session still ends, contact the admin with a screenshot.

Troubleshooting — Account

• I forgot my password.
  — Contact the admin. They can reset it via the dashboard.
• I want to change my display name or register number.
  — These are locked after first launch. Contact the admin — they can update them in the database.
• My account was revoked.
  — Contact the admin. There may have been a duplicate submission, a gift card that didn't verify, or a payment issue on the account.
• I want to delete my account.
  — Contact the admin. They'll remove it and any remaining credit.

Troubleshooting — Other

• I moved CrystalMeth.exe to a different folder and now nothing works.
  — The file association broke. Two fixes:
  • Re-run the installer (recommended).
  • Or open PowerShell in the new folder and run:
  .\CrystalMeth.exe --register
• The exam site loads on my friend's PC but not mine.
  — Check in this order:
  1. Do you have credit? (Donate page → Your Account.)
  2. Do you have Python 3.12 installed? (PowerShell: python --version.)
  3. Is your internet working? (Try loading any other site.)
  4. Are you using the same .seb file?
  If all four check out and it still fails, contact the admin with a screenshot.
• Nothing in this list matches my problem.
  — Go to the Contact Info page. Include what you were doing, what you saw, and a screenshot if possible. The more detail, the faster the fix.
